Specialty Estate Coffee of the Month - Organic Colombian Excelso

When mentioning Colombia to people, 2 things come to mind – cocaine and coffee. At Yahava we only dabble in one of these!!

Colombia is the world's second leading coffee producer, with annual harvests averaging between 10.5 and 11.5 million 60-kilo sacks. It is for this reason that we have taken the opportunity to sample an organic coffee from the Cauca province.

Excelsos are said to be one of Colombia's high quality specialty coffee beans. Grown in the Tolima region of Colombia, it is probably the most popular coffee around the world. This classic coffee is distinguished by its full body, rich flavor, and medium-high acidity. It's perfect for drinking any time of day.

Firstly trying a light roast it became apparent as to exactly why it is that we roast Colombian coffee dark. A full rich flavour is enhanced by the bold acidity, leaving the drinker with the knowledge that not only are they drinking a worthy cup of coffee but also the reassurance that it’s coming from a region that is moving away from drug production.

The dry fragrance of the grounds has that typically nice Colombian intensity and balance. In the cup, this coffee is very aromatic, has a full/firm flavour, some caramel and chocolate, with a delightful sparkle of fresh fruit and balanced aftertaste.
