Darjeeling and Ceylon teas are blended with the rind of Italian bergamot oranges to make one of the world’s great naturally flavoured teas.

Earl Grey Tea is another classic drink that can be enjoyed as a breakfast tea or an afternoon tea. Earl Grey has a floral and citrus taste that awakens the senses. When bergamot orange is mixed with Darjeeling and Ceylon black tea, it endows Earl Grey with a malty, sweet, citrus taste. Like all black teas, Earl Grey is rich in antioxidants. Black Tea is also a source of caffeine, a stimulant or ‘pick-me-up’ (but only about half that of a cup of coffee) because oxidised teas release more caffeine when brewed than is the case with green or white tea.

Earl Grey Black Tea

Botanical: Camellia sinensis

Origin: Sri Lanka

Health Benifits: Black tea contains a mix of antioxidants and flavonoids that have been linked to reducing the risk of chronic heart disease & stroke. Natural polyphenols, found in tea, help with gut health and are beneficial for your immune system, plus an amino acid called L-Theanine, present in black tea, improves brain function making you more alert and focused.

Earl Grey is possibly the most famous of the world’s flavoured teas. Bergamot orange has a flavour that could be described as a curious cross between a lemon and a grapefruit with a dash of lime. The blending of the malty Sri Lankan black tea with bergamot rind creates a tea that offers the palate sweet, floral, sour and bitter flavours that are undeniable and distinct. This famous tea earned its name, (as legend would have it) when it was presented as a gift to the British Prime Minister Charles Grey, from a Chinese Mandarin for saving his son’s life, a colourful story that may well be the product of a fertile imagination rather than fact. Charles Grey never went to China and bergamot was unknown to the Chinese at that time.

Brewing Earl Grey Black Tea

To make the most of your Earl Grey Tea, take 1 teaspoon of our Yahava Earl Grey Black Tea and steep it in a 220 ml cup at 90°c for about 3 minutes. For an extra kick, you can also squeeze in 1 slice of lemon.

The Common Blue Butterfly

Polymmatus icarus

It seems appropriate that this noble little British butterfly should grace our Earl Grey Tea. The Common Blue butterfly loves sunlight and can be found flitting in the grasslands all through the British Isles. The male is a stunning blue colour but the females are a dowdy brown. These little jewels are most active in the midday sun.

What’s The Difference Between Earl Grey Tea And English Breakfast Tea?

Although both teas are made with black tea, Earl Grey Tea is made with a blend of Darjeeling and Ceylon tea which is then mixed with Bergamot orange rind, producing a citrus taste not present in an English Breakfast tea. English breakfast tea, on the other hand, is made from a blend of Ceylon and Assam tea which has more of a hearty, roasted taste.
